about

Dropping this one exclusively on the Bandcamp this month. Met Koenma through the homie Crazy T while working on his project a few years back and have been looking forward to this collab. This joint has had a few versions, but the inspiration of the 50 year anniversary of Hip Hop as a culture and finding this medallion my by my sis, put it all into motion. Feels classic and fresh all at the same time.

Some jewels for the moment. It's bigger than just rap.

lyrics

We need to teach’em the truth
Get back to the roots,
Show’em all the elements,
Culture more than a booth,
You could cut you could scratch,
You could get on the floor,
Graffiti can open doors
Hip Hop is much more… X2

50 years, what a family tree,
From NY to the world,
Never imagine what the family would be,
different sides, 360 degrees,
Taking breaks round and round,
Classic sounds to rocking over some beats,

Whether written or free,
Bigging up the dj, control the party,
Now it tours and fees,
Settling beef in the spot how the crew move,
Bboys and bgirls, Definition of cool,

Now a class and a school,
Look how far we have come,
From real life to the web,
Communicating through drums,
Like ancestors dreams,
The ancestors beam,
Remixed how we lived,
Now it’s feeding our kids,

From the belly to the soul,
Culture keeping us whole,
Worth more than gold,
We need to take control,
Make sure that the story is told,
Beyond what can be sold,
show’em how to live,
For generations after this…

We need to teach’em the truth
Get back to the roots,
Show’em all the elements,
Culture more than a booth,
You could cut you could scratch,
You could get on the floor,
Graffiti can open doors
Hip Hop is much more… X2

So no need for the splits,
We can all get down,
From the young to the old,
Hip Hop the sound,
From coast to the coast,
Number 1 in the town,
when you step off the plane,
They gon love you the same,

From Africa to Japan,
Whether woman or man,
Little kids in the mirror,
Always part of the plan,
In the park like the start,
Power straight from the lights,
Graf, Dance, Dj,
more than a song and a mic,

Each one teach one,
Every time that you write,
Pass it on to the youth,
So they future is bright…
Each one teach one,
Every time that you write,
Pass it on to the youth,
So they future is bright…

We need to teach’em the truth
Get back to the roots,
Show’em all the elements,
Culture more than a booth,
You could cut you could scratch,
You could get on the floor,
Graffiti can open doors
Hip Hop is much more… X2
